Location: Little Tipsoo Lake and Mt Rainier, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington State, United States of America
Portfolio Type: “ THE ONE ” Fine Art Portfolio
I cracked open the door to my car, as ice had formed on the seals of the door. It was three in the morning and I had slept in my car during the night so that I could just hope out of my car and start photographing Tipsoo Lake and Little Tipsoo Lake under a star covered sky. It was cold, but I had the right gear on for the job, I slipped my backpack on, grab my tripod and I was off. As my -40 degrees celcius boots crunch through the snow, I smile and thought “I love these boots”, it didn’t take long at all and I was at the spot I’d scouted the day before, assembled all my gear together and started photographing away.
Its funny how your mind takes into perspective the environment your in, for if I was feeling this cold in my TV room at home I’d be wanting to get a rug to put over me, but out here I felt snug and warm and happy to spend the next 5 hours out in this cold.
This image was taken at about 4.30 in the morning, Little Tipsoo Lake had a thin layer of ice across it with a spot that hadn’t iced over because that was were the creek feed into the lake. The slight colored glow in the sky to the right was Seattle and there was just the faintest hint that dawn was approaching.
What a great morning, fingers where a little cold, but one things for sure when you have the right gear it makes coping with this sort of environment a walk in the park, well a walk in a National Park!
