It was early morning in the a very old Land Rover that I’d hired for this trip and I had theorized on the best time and place to try and capture elephants crossing this dead lake in Amboseli National Park. This morning was extra special for me as I had my wife and two daughters with me and I wanted so much for all of us to experience the Elephants crossing the dead lake. We had travel two hours to get to this spot and I had weaved my way through the maze of marshy tall grass that Amboseli is so well known for, to break out onto the dead lake. I drove about 400 metres out onto the lake and stopped, around us there where zebra and gazelles crossing the lake in small numbers. We all started to scan the horizon for any elephants, I spotted an incredibly long line of something crossing in the heat haze in the distance, I thought it was possibly zebras and asked my daughter Sasha to pass me the binoculars. I brought the binoculars up to my eyes and focused, and I got a sudden rush of adrenaline, I was in disbelief and in my excitement, let yell “Holy Shit”. There was at least 80 elephants crossing the dead lake, after rattling off a few frames, I quickly crunched the car into gear and speed off, they where about 4 miles away so I high tailed it to a intersection point where we could park and let them come by us.

I was so elated for what my family was about to experience, an experience that very few people see, a massive herd of elephants crossing a harsh and unforgiving environment. Naturally I was very excited about the photographic opportunities that this could give me, I couldn’t believe it, I had dreamt about photographing elephants crossing a dead lake, but never really thought that it would happen.

These Elephants where following an ancient tradition of crossing this dead lake in search of water and it gave me the opportunity to show yet another view of an Elephants daily life on the African continent.
